Who Do We Prepare T1 Returns For?
| Client Type | Tax Situations We Handle |
|---|---|
| CCPC Shareholder-Managers | Salary and dividend mix, T4 and T5 slips from your own corporation and T2 integration |
| Self-Employed Individuals | T2125 business income, home office, vehicle expenses, CCA and GST/HST obligations |
| Medical and Dental Professionals | Professional corporation integration, locum income and CME deductions |
| Real Estate Investors | T776 rental income, CCA, the principal residence exemption and capital gains |
| Employees with Major Deductions | T2200 employment expenses, home office, vehicle costs, stock options and deferred compensation |
| Newcomers to Canada | Part-year residency returns and entry-year elections |
When Is a T1 Return Due in Ontario?
| Taxpayer Type | T1 Filing Deadline | Balance Owing Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| Employees and shareholder-managers | April 30 | April 30 |
| Self-employed individuals and their spouses | June 15 | April 30. Interest starts May 1, a deadline many self-employed filers miss. |
| Deceased taxpayers (death January 1 to October 31) | Six months after date of death | Six months after date of death |
Late filing triggers a CRA penalty of 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per complete month.
Important: Self-employed individuals often misunderstand this deadline. While the T1 can be filed as late as June 15, any balance owing is still due April 30. Filing late after April 30 when there is a balance owing triggers interest from May 1 — regardless of the June 15 filing extension.
What Does Our T1 Service Include?
Preparation, review and electronic filing of the T1 General with Schedules 1, 3, 7, 9 and 11, T776, T2125, T1032 pension splitting, Ontario ON428 and ON-BEN, and RC381 where applicable.
Why Does the Salary vs Dividend Mix Matter for CCPC Owners?
Your pay mix affects both your T1 and your corporation’s T2. Only salary creates RRSP room and requires CPP contributions. Passive income above $50,000 grinds the small business deduction, and the 12.2% CCPC rate drives integration. Ontario surtax, the Ontario Health Premium and TOSI limits on spousal income splitting also apply. We review the mix on every shareholder-manager return, flag weak prior-year choices and refer deeper work to our tax planning services.
Frequently Asked Questions
T1 Personal Tax Return
What is the difference between a T1 and a T2 return?
A T1 is your personal income tax return, while a T2 is your corporation’s return. Owners of incorporated businesses usually file both each year, and we prepare them together so your salary, dividends and corporate tax are coordinated.
Do I need to file a T1 if I only receive dividends?
Yes, if you owe tax or the CRA requests a return. Filing also keeps benefit and credit payments flowing and records your RRSP room, so we recommend filing every year even when dividends are your only income.
Can you handle multiple rental properties on my return?
Yes. We report rental income and expenses on Form T776 for single or multiple properties, track CCA on each building and apply the principal residence exemption correctly when a property is sold.
I am self-employed for the first time. What do you need?
Bring your income and expense records, tax slips, vehicle logbook and prior returns. We calculate business income on Form T2125 and can also file any outstanding years through our catch-up tax filing service.
What documents do I need for my personal tax return?
You need your CRA slips, RRSP and donation receipts, medical receipts, last year’s Notice of Assessment, rental and self-employment records, and the cost and sale details of any investments or property you sold.
